Ford Mustang
1971

MUSTANG MACH ONE 1971

The "Big Mustang" was the last of the mustang's era . The basic platform was lower, longer, heavier and wider with a one-inch longer wheelbase.
The 1971's features remained pure Mustang. The pony and corral with horizontal bar returned to the center of the grille. The grille mesh was hexagonal molded plastic. Large headlights were mounted at the extreme outboard end of the grille opening. To be ok with federal safety standards, the '71s introduced recessed exterior door handles, steel beam guards in the door and hidden windshield wipers. To comply with emissions standards, an air injection system was fitted to all except the Boss 351 and SCJ429s. Latter, an air pump and plumbing was installed to cut down on hydrocarbons and CO-2.
The available options were power windows and an electric rear window defogger which were added to the lineup for the first time. The rear deck spoiler  remained on the options list, but the sports slat were deleted on the SportsRoof  ( low angle of the rear window).
The Mach 1 styling incorporated optional NASA-developed hood scoops that directed air through a built-in duct to the underside of the hood where it fed  into the carburetor intake on ram air optioned vehicles;  color-keyed polyurethane front bumpers, raked windshield and hidden wipers.
          Total U.S. production was 149,678 units.  65,696 hardtops; 23,956 SportsRoofs; 6,121 convertibles; 17,406 Grandes , and 36,499 Mach I SportsRoofs, 1,806 Boss 351s.

1972

MUSTANG MACH ONE 1972

Mustang found itself in the midst of a dilemma. It had been in a race to pack more power and performance into each model, but emissions controls contradicted those efforts.
Inside and out, the '72s were the same as the 1971s. For the first time in its history, the Mustang's front grille remained unchanged.
The production for 1972 was 125,093 units, as follows: 57,350 hardtops; 15,622 SportsRoofs; 18,045 Grandes, and 27,675  Mach 1s, 6,121 convertibles.

1973

                                           MUSTANG MACH ONE 1973

1973 would mark the end of the first generation of the ponycar. The Mustang had gained 575 pounds and was over a foot longer. Mustang was destined to undergo an extensive change in design for the 1974 model year.
The 1973s were unchanged from their 1972 counterparts, but there were some differences to distinguish them. The front grille size and shape remained the same but the plastic egg-crate mesh was larger and mounted further forward. The pony and corral lost the horizontal bars but the shorter vertical ones returned. A new vertical parking/turn signal lights were mounted at each end of the grille and the entire area was surrounded by bright trim. Headlights fit into fender extensions and were housed within a chrome, rectangular bezel. The taillight bezels were bright metal. To meet government five-mph impact standards, the front bumper was fitted with a color-keyed, urethane impact-absorbing system and the rear bumper was mounted further away to comply with  impact regulations.
The Mach 1 received a new bodyside tape treatment and a three-quarter vinyl roof was optional on the Mach 1 and other SportsRoof models.
Engine availability was unchanged from '72. The Hurst shifter with four-speed transmissions used a round knob rather than Hurst's  T-handle.
           Total production : 134, 867 units.  In all, a total of 10,820 SportsRoofs; 11,853 convertibles; 25,274 Grandes, 51,480 hardtops;  and 35,440 Mach 1s.
